My Dog Named Whatever is a delightful adventure story of a mixed up 12- year old boy, CB, who finds friendship in a quirky little dog he stumbled over one day going home from school. He names the dog, Whatever, after his favorite saying, 'whatever'. The two find adventure in collecting mysterious pink papers that have been surfacing around the small city of Alextown, SC. It seems that Whatever has been a run away from an experimental lab and has the ability to see into the future with his right eye. Dr. Avery Kingston wants him back and will stop at nothing to find him. CB will help to save the day. Read about these great adventures and funny happenings along the way to the TRUTH ABOUT WHATEVER! Author/Educator, Scott Alexander, has created a genuine hero in this little fireball, furry, and freaky version of Man's Best Friend.

MY DOG NAMED WHATEVER EXCERPT: We moved on the sticky, hot, day of July first from a small seaside town called Pauline's Isle, SC. My birthday was on The Fourth of July. Yep, I was a firecracker baby. My hair was fireball red. This made me look like a tall, 12-year old, human torch going down the avenue. Dad was opening up the new Better Man Builder Mart. Mom got a job at the Cornerstone Computer Store as an office manager. Phillip was my nasty-nosed-nibbliot of a four-year-old brother. He seemed to always have one of ten fingers up his nose digging for go-o-o-ld nuggets! I just called him, Booger Boy. And me- just call me CB. Time seemed to move by at a snail's pace as we unpacked all of our boxes. We had moved into a quiet neighborhood that had a house on every spot except for one vacant lot and an open field behind it. Many days I went to that open lot to let my imagination flow. School had opened up in this slow down place called, Alextown, SC. I had started the sixth grade at Alextown Middle School with my new best friend. His name was Thomas Hopkins. His dad was the local lawyer-judge-magistrate type person. For me, each and every day was an up-in-the-morning, out-to-school, sit-in-school, come-home-from-school, do-my-homework, mess-around-with-Thomas, and eat-with-my-family, kind of day. Man! My life had gotten bor-r-r-ring and pretty mucho lame-ooooo! UNTIL- One Friday afternoon, I was walking and wishing at the same time. This practice often got me into lots of trouble. I noticed a shaking motion in the bushes. About knee level, just off to my right, I heard a strange huffing and wheezing sound. It made me wonder if an animal was about to pounce on my leg. I didn't much like the idea of becoming a snack for a mystery mammal. I jumped back and picked up a stick. It wasn't a very big one. It was big enough to swat with. I saw a nose, some whiskers, a head, and two flopped over ears parting the shrubbery and slobber was dripping out of the mouth of a very strange little dog. I made eye contact with and stared into two very sad eyes. I squatted down. Suddenly, out of the bushes, a body and a tail followed the rest of that mangy mutt. The force behind this bounding dog had bowled me over like a pin in the alley at The Alextown Bowl-a-Rama. I wasn't too sure whether he was going to bite me or just lick me to death.

This children's book is a delightful, fast moving, adventure about a dog that has powers and picks CB (a 12- year old boy) to help him fight the man who kept him locked up in a science lab for years. Scott has meshed the names of former students that he taught over the years and his 7-year old daughter, Leslie, approves of the story. It is written for intermediate readers and has a wonderful comic atmosphere about the life of a 12-year old boy, who has just moved and needs a friend. READ ON AND ENJOY!
