Welcome to the childhood story of Pastor Tory Hope and the rest of the blessed family and church community of the Good Hope New Light God Always With Us And Not Them Missionary Baptist Church!

The last thing Tory and his brother and sister exemplified was perfection. After all, they were Pastor’s Kids (P.K.s), which means they were born so that others could practice unconditional love and a whole host of other virtues—

“Brother Matthew was our Youth Director; he was only twenty years old so he could relate to the youth and he was cool too. He was in college and this was his part-time job. Youth Sunday was always popping with him; that’s why we liked it so much. Now, Brother Matthew had an assistant and her name was Sister Finely. She was every boy’s dream. She was so beautiful. Sister Finely was an Elementary School Teacher. She taught second grade, and she had a lot of patience. To be with us you had to have a lot of patience or be medicated.”

Growing Up in Church is a laugh-out-loud experience that will have you saying, “Praise da laud”!

The next morning was Sunday,we had to go to church like it or not. We would be there all day. That's why we hated it so much. It was boring. Other kids went to church for one hour and some didn't even have to go at all. We had to go all day every Sunday cause daddy was the Pastor. Yes my daddy was the Pastor of GOOD HOPE NEW LIGHT GOD ALWAYS WITH US AND NOT THEM MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH. That was really the name no joke. Daddy even made us go to church during the week and on school nights. Sometimes twice a week. Man,that was messed up. This was torture to us. Somehow we always found ways to amuse ourselves. Every Sunday we had to sit on the front pew with Mama. That was even more torture but sometimes it could be quite amusing. Especially when Deacon Small got up to take up the offering. He was a James Brown look-a-like and act-a-like.
