Poet John Foster has infused this volume with a unique blend of humor and insight. From lighthearted limericks and “higgledy-piggledy” verse to more serious, yet varied, forms of poetry, he offers compelling observations on human nature and Mother Nature. While his style reflects a preference for cadence and rhyme, his themes range from inspirational and philosophical to witty offerings marked by clever wordplay. Featured in this book are a series of limericks in which he showcases remarkable names of real people — unusual names from his collection, begun over 50 years ago. In addition to its humorous side, this volume offers the reader an opportunity to explore, with Foster, themes of love, beauty, the environment, achievement, loss, kindness, hope...all presented in a clear, readable style.

Masquerade
Transported into "let's pretend",
the dancing couples whirl,
their faces masked with subtle blend
of black brocade and pearl.
The men bedecked with leathered flair,
their doublets gold embossed;
the ladies' coiffed and feathered hair
to jeweled gowns not lost.
The music of the Renaissance
enriches fabled scene
of pillars and of marbled fonts,
fit for a king and queen.
Ant then we come back down to earth,
director shouting "Cut"!
The film crew promptly quells the mirth
and draws the sound stage shut.
So much for fantasy escapes;
they cannot last for long.
Dependence on one's masks and capes
is often very wrong.
May this, our false pretense, be "cut",
at least to some degree.
Feed not on make-believing but
on life's reality.

About John F. Foster
Raised in Connecticut, John Foster holds degrees in French from both Yale University and Middlebury College. Prior to retiring to Florida with his wife Lorraine, he was an educator and administrator at private secondary schools in the northeast. Since his retirement, he has experienced a kind of literary epiphany in the discovery and development of his talent as a poet. Hence the title, “Discovery”. In addition to poetry, his hobbies are bridge (he has taught the game for 16 years) and community theatre. The Fosters have one daughter who lives in New York State.
