Comparing book publishing companies can be a time-consuming exercise. We've done it for you. The chart above helps you compare the book publishing services of Outskirts Press with three of our leading competitors. Book publishing quality is nearly identical against all four companies, but many of their publication services differ greatly.

Perhaps the best way to compare publishers is by the value to you in terms of profitability. Use this link to set your own retail price and royalty for an Outskirts Press book, and then compare the profit results with other companies.

Dear Fellow Author,

I understand your frustration.

You have a book to publish but all the publishing options seem wrong. Old fashioned publishers reject everything or take all your rights. Vanity printers cost too much money and leave you with boxes of books in your garage. PODs don't give you enough information up-front and give you "sticker shock" when your book is done.

After months... even years... of passionately writing your book, you want to keep all the control and set all the parameters. That's not asking too much, is it?

And yet, everywhere you look, they want too much control, too much of your rights, or too much money.

Well, I'm here to tell you...

It doesn't have to be difficult to publish a book.

I learned the hard way so you don't have to. Now you can take advantage of my mistakes. Since 9th grade I have been submitting outlines and sample chapters to "traditional" publishers and agents. Guess what. I have never been accepted. Not once.

I investigated self-publishing with a bulk printing company because I really wanted to be a published writer. But most of them wanted at least $5,000 up front. And I had to buy 10 ISBN numbers from Bowkers when all I wanted was one. Plus, I was going to have to do all the distribution and fulfillment. Thanks, but no thanks. I'd rather be writing.

Print-on-Demand offers a great alternative, but most of the POD companies out there don't give you enough information or enough control. Only when your book is published do you find out what the retail price is, and it's usually very high. Do they even tell you want the distributor margin is? Most don't.

THIS IS A TRUE STORY

I published a book with a POD company a few years ago. They made me design the interior myself through some new-fangled template. It was kind of hard, but not as hard as making my own print-ready file, as some other PODs wanted.

If I wasn't so motivated, I would have given up right there.

When my 108-page book was published, it had a retail price of $10.95. They never asked me what distributor margin I wanted. Even now, I still don't know what my trade discount is.

The only thing I know is that they gave me a deep bulk discount on buying mass quantities of my own book. Great! If I wanted that many copies at once, I wouldn't have chosen print on demand.

Doesn't "bulk discounting" defeat the purpose of on-demand? It seems to me they just artificially inflated my pricing so they could offer me "bulk discounts" on higher volume.

Does that mean I was paying way more than I should have for lower quantities?

What do you think?

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Let's do a quick comparison. Old-fashioned publishers accept less than 2% of the manuscripts they receive. You could go your whole life without being published. Even if you are accepted, they take all your publishing rights and approximately 85% of your sales.

Bulk printers expect up front payment for thousands of books, running you between $5,000 - $20,000 or more.

Frankly, neither of those options sound very good.

But custom publishing is different. We offer four publishing packages costing just $199, $399, $599, and $999, respectively.

The best part is, you can begin the publishing process right now for just a $35 deposit.
