Pat Barker at forty-three finds herself at a crossroads to an uncertain furture. She has been unable to recover from the recent loss of her beloved husband, Mark. Her three children are grown and on their own, leaving her alone with only her faithful dog, Happy. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Pat begins to have haunting dreams about Todd, her first love at seventeen, who was killed when his Air Force plane went down in the ocean during the war. In desperation, Pat decides she must get away and rents a cottage on the beach in hopes that she will find relief from her despair. Just when she thinks she will drown in her misery, she catches a glimpse of a handsome stranger jogging on the beach past the cottage. Where has she seen him before?
