Warden Donald "D.W." Wyrick is a legendary figure who tirelessly strode the halls of the maximum security Missouri State Penitentiary.
As Warden, he faced a multitude of challenges while commanding the oldest penitentiary west of the Mississippi River. He took the helm when the penitentiary was notably the most violent in the country and maintained order, security and control when it reached an explosive crisis.
Calling the Missouri State Penitentiary the "bloodiest 47 acres in America" was no overstatement. In one year, there was over five hundred assaults and multiple homicides. Three veteran guards were brutally murdered by convicts.
While thwarting several convicts' attempt to escape during a riot, Wyrick was taken hostage.
Times were tough because there were no other maximum security prisons in Missouri.
Warden Wyrick's life was corrections and no man ever gave more!
