In ABC's of Lighthearted Living...My Rx, Dr. Maggie Mears shows us how to achieve a higher level of happiness without ever popping a single pill. What's her prescription?
Twenty-six alphabetically arranged proven principles leave you laughing, inspired, confident and more connected-to your inner feelings and to those around you. Packed with moving stories of those who have overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles to achieve great joy - stories gathered from Dr. Mears' 30-plus years as a physician of Internal Medicine - ABC's of Lighthearted Living offers a profound message of hope for anyone struggling to find fulfillment in a challenging world. In this alphabet, A is for Attitude and V is for Vacation. Dr. Mears' ruminations on such apparently simple topics reveal the immense power of transformation inherent in all of us.

Forever etched in my heart is the memory of two ladies with horrible Rheumatoid Arthritis. They suffered daily. Yet, they were the happiest, cheeriest, twinkle-in-their-eye people that I had ever met. “How do you do it?” I asked one of them at the time of her office visit. As she slowly struggled from her chair, and put her two gnarled, swollen hands on my arms, she stated, “I never give in to this. Nothing will have the power to destroy my happiness.” Wow. It seems to me that being outrageous means facing and overcoming our own personal demons; taking the step beyond what we thought possible; or beyond the limits that others so carefully had constructed on our behalf; doing what others said would never work. John, a delightful patient, had developed a serious eye condition, retinitis pigmentosa, which rendered him blind by the age of thirty. Now, at forty-two, he visited my office with Luke, his loyal guide dog, to say goodbye. John and his wife had been patients for about five years and were now moving to Colorado, so that he could attend law school. They had been in to have me sign papers so that the university would purchase him a Braille computer. I could imagine how difficult it would be to move to a new home, learn to maneuver around a new apartment, and cope with the daily tasks that the sighted community takes so much for granted. Any wimpy person would have said, “No way.” But not John, nor his wife, Linda. Even Luke sported a bright red leash, a symbol of their outrageous attitude. He left the office with his tail wagging. John, Linda and I hugged and shed tears. I admire that couple so much.
